’Cat Tales: 10 Campus Hacks For Saving Money on Campus

By Quinn Western, social media and photography intern

There are a lot of great things about being a Wildcat—class breaks by the creek, free access to the WREC, cat puns—but being a ferocious feline comes with so many more perks. Here are 10 ways Chico State students can save some cash that you might not have known about.

1. Check out Kindles at the library

kindle

Read your favorite books (or textbooks) on one of the Kindles you can check out for three weeks from Meriam Library. Psst … you can also check out laptops. Ask for Cammi Carter at the front desk, just don’t forget your Wildcat ID. (You actually don’t need to ask for Cammi Carter to check these out, she’s just my favorite front-desk attendant.)

2. Get your tickets ‘ere!

The first 100 students to buy tickets to any Chico Performances show will only fork up $10. That’s EVERY show, including the Pink Floyd Experience in April. In addition to that steal, students also get into every sporting event free. That’s right, as a Chico State student, you’re a season ticket holder.

3. Free movie showings every Tuesday

Every Tuesday in Ayres 106 at 7:30 p.m., the Humanities Center hosts the University Film Series. This year’s theme is food and culture. (So you’re probably going to be hungry by the end of each movie. See No. 6.) Check out the screening lineup here.

4. Discount on coffee/soda if you bring your own cup

This doesn’t need an explanation. Just head on over to Creekside, Common Grounds, or whichever AS Dining location is your favorite.

5. Wildcat Wallet

This Wildcat Wallet Facebook page brought to you by Student Financial Services posts tips, deals, and steals for Chico State students. Its offerings range from scholarship opportunities to budget advice.

6. Buy meat and veggies from the University Farm

It’s time to bury the Ramen stereotype. There’s an abundance of fresh produce and meat that can be bought from the University Farm. The Organic Vegetable Project brings veggies for sale to the SSC Plaza every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Find secret passwords in the campus and student announcements for discounts on your produce.

7. Wednesday word of the day

Check out the Associated Students Dining Facebook page every Wednesday for the secret word that will give you a special deal on campus at either Marketplace, Common Grounds, Creekside Cafe, Holt Station, or Butte Station.

8. Free school supplies

Snag some free books and school supplies from the Associated Students Sustainability office on the third floor of the Bell Memorial Union. Never buy another spiral notebook that you keep managing to lose. Never again.

9. Wheely good deals

The Bike Cart offers a lot of deals for students including cheap tubes, fixes, and other equipment.

10. Take a field trip to a museum

Students have access to a plethora of exhibit experiences during their time on campus. Visits to the Janet Turner Print Museum and Valene L. Smith Museum of Anthropology are free, entry to the Gateway Science Museum costs $3 with a student ID.
